Genre Theorist Number 2

Who is the Theorists?
Gunther Kress's theory
He is born on 26th november 1949
is a professor of semiotics and education at the institute of education of the university of london.

Genre changes and then new genres are developed when situations in society change and new situations occur. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JipHEz53sU&ob=av2e

Ie. Birtney spears 'hit me baby one more time' was about her talking about the guy she is in love with but the guy doenst want to know her. Where as now in society women are seen to better and stronger then men. Men do more pop songs then women do now. Like in christina Aguilarea her music video revolves her live more around others than herselves. The view of women has also been seen to be more dominant as men are going from rap to pop and that women are going from pop to rap.

Enrique Iglesias and nicki minaj:
I like it' this music video is based around him getting to party with all the girls and it has some rap involved by pitbul. It shows how enrique is a pop artist and if you compare it to nicki minaj's 'Super Bass' it shows that nicki minaj has the men following her alround and she is a rap artist.

In the super bass music video it shows that she is more dominant and that she is in control where as she is the only female rapper and this contridicts the conventions of rap as it supposed to be a man doing rap and women doing pop.

Violence:
The music video that has violence in it is Rihanna's "Man Down" and Eminem's "Kim". In Eminem music video it is showing the increase of violent territory.
"Don't you get it, bitch? No one can hear you.
Now shut the fuck up, and get what's comin' to you... You were supposed to love me!!!!!
(Sound of Kim choking)
NOW BLEED, BITCH, BLEED
BLEED, BITCH, BLEED, BLEEEEEED!"

(Source: From the song Kim, by Eminem)

And when the controversial rap artist Eminem came to Toronto in 2000, politicians and activists unsuccessfully called for the government to bar him from the country, on the grounds that his violent lyrics promoted hatred against women. For instance, his song Kim graphically depicts him murdering his wife; and Kill You describes how he plans to rape and murder his mother.
In spite of (or perhaps because of) his promotion of violence,  Eminem's success is not exceptional. Extremely violent lyrics have moved into the mainstream of the music industry.

The Universal Music Group, the world's largest music company, lists Eminem, Dr Dre and Limp Bizkit all of whom have been criticized for their violent and misogynist lyrics among its top-grossing artists. And Madonna's 2002 music video What It Feels Like For a Girl contained such graphic violence that even MTV refused to air it more than once.

I think that this music video conveys violence in the society as people watch this music video and get influenced by it to do things that they regret in the future. I think that gunter kress's theory that Genre changes when the situation in society changes and new situations occur therefore new genres are developed is actual being conveyed in the Eminem music video "kim" because it shows how society has progressed into more violent and distruptie behaviour I.e the riots(teenagers breaking in to shops, stealing, burning down places, etc).  I think that gunter kress's theory is absolutely right that the genre of music videos change when problems like Riots occur. How ever i think that society are effected by the change in the genre of music as the music industry are kind of promoting violence and society has a problem with that as they want to stop violence.

The music video that has violence in it is Rihanna's "Man Down". this music video
Where as rihanna music video shows how she shot the man she loved as he raped her the night before. it shows that violence conveys a certain message that do it, always hate people and never listen to anyone.

The music video that conveys the moral messages are jessie j's who's laughing now, one direction's "what makes you beautiful". i htink that jessie J's music video "who's laughing now suggests that when she was little she got bullied and she never liked it until the day she could stand up for herself so i think that this music video assosicates with the victims of being bullied. She stood up to the bullies and this could incourage people in society to fight off bullies.

How ever i think that One direction's " what makes you beautiful" hasa certain moral message about girls being beautiful however they are. I think people like this kind of music more as this promotes more positive behaviour in society. I think that what ever the situations is the genre will be ever changing and it will develop until there problems in society are dealt with for good.
